The mangroves of Marie-Galante

Vieux-Fort, Marie-Galante

Among the wonders on Marie-Galante are the mangroves. Important for the biodiversity of the island, they can be visited in part by foot, or more extensively by kayak. If you were looking for a change of scenery, look no further! Known for its beautiful beaches, sugar cane fields, and distilleries, here is yet another facet of the island with one hundred mills… The river is smooth and calm, its mirrored surface leading you into the heart of the mangroves. Keep an eye out for the many birds, crabs, and freshwater turtles hiding between the roots and branches of the trees. About 1.5 km in, the river becomes shallow and it’s time to loop back to shore.

Watch out for mosquitos and be sure to bring repellent to avoid bites.

Location: in front of the Vieux Fort beach in Saint-Louis.
