Located in the heart of the historic center of Pointe-à-Pitre, not too far from the market, the Saint-John Perse museum welcomes visitors to enjoy its collection of art, engravings, photographs, furniture, and costumes. Temporary and permanent exhibits celebrate the literary work of Saint-John Perse, also known as Alexis Léger. Designed in French ateliers, its metal frame is reminiscent of New Orleans.

Abandoned and nearly demolished in the early 1970s, the municipality took over the building in 1975. It had served as the home to Ernest Souques, the manager of the Darboussier factory, and each manager of the factory after him.

First classified as a historic monument in 1979, it went through a period of restoration between 1981 to 1987. The Saint-John Perse Museum was created in honour of Nobel Prize winner Alexis Léger on the centenary of his birth. It was classified a Musée de France (in 2002) and Maison des Illustres (in 2011) by the French Ministry of Culture.
