Belle Esperance, Morne-à-l'Eau

Voir le trajet

Guadeloupean tradition for excellency, the Pitts à coq, or cockfights, are like oxen-pulling contests, it is a discipline in its own right.

Otherwise illegal on French territory, it’s status as a protected local tradition in DOM-TOM and Nord-Pas-de-Calais allows it continue here unabated.

Each participant presents their cock to the weigh-in to ensure a fight between equals, then the spectators place their bets. The champions enter the small arena and a frenzied atmosphere takes over. The duel lasts about fifteen minutes.

Visit the Pitt à coqs museum of Morne-à-l'Eau. Dolores Belair, patroness of the place, will be happy to guide your visit and share the history of this discipline. You may attend the preparation of roosters, their weigh-ins, and the fights.
