The iguanas of Désirade

La Désirade

Voir le trajet

Delicatissima Iguanas are endemic to the Lesser Antilles and populate the beautiful island of Désirade in abundance. You will see them here and there, in the trees, lounging in the grass, on the road (be careful not to run them over)... but to get a really good view, you should head to the old cotton mill site.

Recognizable for their colour, more gray or even black than they are green, this species is classified endangered, making their presence on the island all the more special. Just a stone’s throw from the remains of the cotton factory a mess (group) of Delicatissima are waiting for you. Lounging together, you can distinguish the males and females by their colouring. Females are green to green-brown, and the males are grey to grey-black, they cohabit in peace, munching on morsels of bread from the passing visitors.

Directions (to the old cotton mill site): from the port follow signs to Baie-Mahault and drive towards the lighthouse. A small parking lot with a carbet (traditional wooden pavilion) to the right marks the spot.

If you do not rent a vehicle while staying in Désirade, take one of the minibuses. You will get a complete tour of the island in 2 hours with a stop to see the iguanas, all while hearing stories about the region from your cheerful hosts!
