Fort Delgrès (fortress)

The fortress was built in the 17th century to defend Basse-Terre from the English and renamed in 1989 after Commander Louis Delgrès, who fought for abolition and freedom. The very same Delgrès who decided to blow up the residence he and some of his men were taking refuge in rather than surrender to General Antoine Richepance, sent by Bonaparte to restore slavery.

Directions
> From Pointe-à-Pitre on the N1, take the first right past the entrance of Basse-Terre. 30 meters later, turn right again (2nd exit, rue Gobert). The fort is at the end.
> From Côte-sous-le-Vent, turn left at the roundabout with four horses, take the first right, pass La Poste and again turn right after the school (sign Fort St Charles), then take the first left.
